History

The District Vanguard was established in 2025 in response to a notable gap in meaningful press coverage for Washington, DC’s Black artists and designers. In addressing this absence, an editorial collective of strategists, writers, designers, and artists with deep ties to the city came together, unified by a shared commitment to elevating the creative practitioners who shape DC’s cultural landscape.

The collective includes Eden Elam, a designer and media strategist; Shadé Reneé, a multidisciplinary designer and gallery owner; Anisa Olufemi, a curator and arts worker; Myles Loftin, an award-winning photographer; Jennifer Rittner, a design professor and editor of The Black Experience in Design; Keith Elam, a music and marketing strategist; and Jonah Nigh, a development executive.

Rather than positioning itself solely as a critical voice, The District Vanguard is oriented toward contribution, documentation, and sustained engagement with the city’s creative community.

From that decision, The District Vanguard was born.

Homage to scurlock studio

The District Vanguard is proud to pay homage to photographer Addison N. Scurlock (1883–1964), whose practice and photographs bore witness to the beauty, dignity, and complexity of Black Washington. Through his lens, everyday life was rendered with care and intention, preserving moments of pride, tenderness, and self-determination for generations to come. We walk in his footsteps, guided by his commitment to seeing his community fully and honoring it without compromise.
