Fashion Designer

BIO
Meru Kush is a fashion designer whose work is shaped by his lifelong curiosity in space, image, and form. Since his training in architecture and visual studies, he draws on inspiration from art across different cultures and continents.

When do you first remember being creative, and what first drew you to it?
I would always illustrate weird imaginary people and fantastical scenes when I was younger. There are a lot of creatives in my family historically, so everything came somewhat naturally.
I remember I used to draw a lot of transformers characters too. That was pretty awesome.
How did you pick your medium?
I was always interested in fashion since a young age. I don’t know if I’ve necessarily picked my medium. I’d say this outcome had some elements of fate to it.
I remember my father showing me a photograph of me at like two or three years old. In the photo I’m sitting down and flipping through a bunch of fashion magazines. There was a huge smile on my face too, so maybe that was the moment.
What questions or ideas are you most interested in exploring right now?
The question I’ve been most interested in exploring is how to create something that touches people to the core. That has always been a very important thing for me. We’re all human with different experiences, so I believe that the thing that can bring everyone together is emotion. I think a lot of people these days try not to be in tune with their emotions as much, but those same feelings allow for empathy and compassion for others.
At the end of the day, thats what I want my creations to express.

“rushing things usually doesn’t produce the best outcomes. Allow yourself to experience life truly, and all your dreams and ambitions will happen naturally. The universe works in funny ways.”

Who do you look up to?
Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and Telfar Clemens.

How has your practice evolved over the years?
My practice has evolved over the years as I’ve gained more knowledge of the importance of small details within a design. Whether that be making better patterns for samples, communicating with manufacturers, and especially choosing specific color palettes to help convey the meaning behind a design.
I also believe what has helped me out so much throughout the years is coming to the conclusion that rushing things usually doesn’t produce the best outcomes. Allow yourself to experience life truly, and all your dreams and ambitions will happen naturally. The universe works in funny ways.
What are you currently working on or thinking about next?
I am currently working on a new collection titled “Talk to The Sea”. It will be my first official collection for my brand; Mama Loves You Too.
I was deeply inspired throughout my travels over the years, especially in Italy, Morocco, and France. The goal is to show off that influence within these pieces that I have been working on. It has been incredibly fun to work on this collection because many of the designs don’t look like anything I’ve done before.
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my mother and father for believing in my talent. They have always been incredibly supportive of my dreams and passions. I’ve gotten a lot of my style inspiration from them.
I would also like to thank my friend Alexander Morgan, who has been somewhat a mentor for me when it comes to navigating the creative space.
Lastly, I would like to thank one of my best friends, Kevin Harris. We were both in architecture school together, so I’ve gained a lot of influence from him as well.
